Home Owners, Property Managers, Tile Installers, and Retail Tile Stores need to be aware that OSHA intends to enforce the new silica Dust standard. Non-compliance of OSHA standards carries steep penalties. The new standard is scheduled for strict enforcement starting June 23rd, 2017.,
Silica dust is produced when tile and thin-set is removed from residential and commercial ceramic tile floors. OSHA has determined that prolonged unprotected exposure to silica causes silicosis, a debilitating lung cancer. The new dust containment standard lowers the permissible silica exposure rate with-in an 8-hour day.
The new OSHA regulations clearly outline the measures responsible parties must take to stay with-in the new dust containment standard. First, the actual person doing the work must be made aware by the responsible parties of the hazards of silica dust exposure. Additionally, the workers must be given the use of equipment and protective gear that are OSHA compliant.
The personal protective wear includes OSHA compliant breathing mask to capture small dust particles. Likewise, the dust containment equipment must be OSHA certified filters and vacuums with self-cleaning mechanisms
